The interior design in Milan - Casa Rospigliosi - by studio .traccia. brought to light the brutalist identity of the building, combining original and contemporary elements, together defining a new possible way of living.

The project

A residence from the 50s, immersed in a park in the San Siro district of Milan is the context of this renovation project. The complex reflects the urbanity of the city and the vastness of the rural spaces. Echoing the stadium and its bare tectonics, the building reveals its reinforced concrete framework on the ground floor, which is however denied inside the apartments, under layers of masonry and plaster. Re-emerging the structure of the building immediately seemed like an idea capable of giving a specific identity to the space, in an intervention in which the desire was to reunite two separate apartments.

The large space of the living room is freed up and becomes an opportunity to reconnect the two units, basically keeping the guest bedroom area unchanged to the west and instead concentrating the interventions in the east area of the house. Traces of the original structure re-emerge in the large new living space, revealing a raw urban, almost brutalist soul which materializes in 3 concrete columns.
The functionalist aspect of these H-shaped pillars, originally used as shafts for the systems, is also restored, leaving the electrical and heating ducts visible inside. The vertical rhythm of the columns that mark the living area is superimposed and reiterated by the horizontal rhythm of the ceiling, defining the kitchen area with a change of height and colour.
The spatial reorganization of the entire apartment takes place through the definition of a functional spine in the center of the house, in which the bathrooms, the entrance and the closet are organised. However, the perception of this block is altered by full-height openings that make it permeable, in which sliding or pivoting doors connect or separate public and private spaces of the house.

A series of custom-designed and made-to-measure iron furniture is inserted between the pillars and in the niches, to bring the brutalist identity of the house to unexpected areas, such as the bedroom. The microcement floor becomes the mending element of the entire apartment; colored material inlays, made by ARKdeko'® to respond to the project in a personalized chromatic key, place the accent on specific spaces, drawing inspiration from the Lombard tradition, but re-proposing it in a contemporary key. The result is a series of original and contemporary elements, which together define a new possible way of living.
